Who Can Train with RunWalk Tulsa?
Anyone can. The Galloway Run-Walk-Run method is designed for all fitness levels—from brand-new runners and walkers to Boston hopefuls. Whether you’re training for a 5K, half marathon, or a full marathon, RunWalk Tulsa meets you where you are.
How Often Will I Train?
Your weekly schedule will depend on your goals, but here’s a general outline:
-
Everyone should take at least one full rest day per week.
-
Beginners: Run 3 days/week + walk or cross-train 2 days
-
Novices: Run 3 days/week + cross-train 2 days
-
Advanced runners: Run 4 days/week + cross-train 1 day
Cross-training helps improve endurance while reducing wear and tear—think water running, elliptical, cycling, or anything non-pounding that you enjoy.
How Fast Do I Need to Be?
RunWalk Tulsa groups are organized by pace and ability, so you’ll always have training partners at your level. Each group is led by an experienced Pace Group Leader to help you stay on target.
All participants are encouraged to maintain a conversational pace during long runs. That means you should be able to talk (maybe with a breath between sentences), but not be gasping for air between every word.
What Is the Weekly Group Run Schedule?
RunWalk Tulsa offers both morning and evening training opportunities each week. You only need to commit to three runs per week:
-
Two weekday runs (30–45 minutes each)
-
One Saturday long run (gradually increasing in distance)
Saturday runs start short and build over time, with marathon runners eventually covering up to 6 hours at the peak of training. [See Training Days & Locations →]
Do You Cancel for Bad Weather?
Not usually. Unless the weather is dangerous, RunWalk Tulsa keeps going! Rain, cold, or heat—the group will be there, and that energy keeps you motivated even when it’s tough to get out the door.
What If I Miss a Training Session?
No problem. While attending regularly helps with accountability and progress, it’s not required. Many people reach their goals even if they miss a session here and there—especially when they follow the program on their own. But most find that showing up helps with motivation and consistency.
Why Use Walk Breaks?
The Run-Walk-Run method boosts performance and reduces fatigue. Here’s why walk breaks work:
-
Help prevent late-run slowdowns
-
Reduce muscle fatigue and injury risk
-
Distribute effort across more muscle groups
-
Speed up recovery
-
Boost mental endurance by breaking the run into doable segments
Even elite runners use them. One sub-3:00 marathoner said:
“Instead of thinking ‘six more brutal miles,’ I just told myself, ‘One mile till the next break.’ That kept me going.”
Should I Use Walk Breaks on Weekday Runs Too?
Yes. Using walk breaks during your shorter weekday runs helps your body recover more efficiently from your long weekend runs and improves consistency.
Does RunWalk Tulsa Have a Walking Group?
Yes! We offer both Run-Walk-Run and Walking Groups. All paces, all ages, and all abilities are welcome. Whether you’re walking for fitness or training for a race, you’ll find support and community here.
